Book excerpt: Introduction
When I first got the idea to write this book, it was for the latter groups—those who may or may not have fully recovered from COVID. They may be struggling to regain strength after an extended period of illness, or they may still be experiencing after-effects of COVID-19. Termed long COVID, post-acute COVID, chronic COVID, or long-haul COVID, individuals in this last group have faced great challenges both in their recovery and in their efforts to be seen. In speaking with a medical professional about the rehabiliation needs of people living with long COVID—gentle exercise where you don’t push too hard was his analysis of their needs—I realized I could help. As a fitness professional, I have spent more than a decade helping people embrace physical activity without the need for crushing workouts. In fact, I created The Move More Institute™ to encourage people to just “Move More, Feel Better.”
If you’ve read any of my other books, you’ll know that activities of daily living and gentle exercises that don’t require expensive gym memberships, fancy clothing, or special equipment are what I teach people of all ages. And so, I realized as I pulled this book together, that it can also benefit individuals who contracted—and recovered from—COVID-19, as well as the countless people around the world who had to modify their regular routines during pandemic lockdowns (and may have experienced loss of muscle mass as a result). I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’ve fallen into the inactive group on more than one occasion during this pandemic.
I’ve known people who have gotten sick with COVID-19. Some recovered. Others didn’t. To date, I have not personally met anyone living with Long COVID. But I have met and worked with hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages, from all walks of life, and with all levels of fitness. Some were recovering from illness or injury. And my goal with all of them was to improve their lives, by helping them embrace functional fitness to maintain and/or regain optimal health. Still more people all over the world have bought and benefited from one of my other books.
